Is Your Open Office Causing a Creative Crisis?

Whenever Ben walks by, he comments on the design work prominently display on your monitor; he typically thinks you need to move everything to be center-aligned. Jane, with the constant cough, believes that the secret to convincing a client that an idea is brilliant is to speak above a normal decibel level. And Susan's mom packs her lunch, which usually includes some form of meat that smells like a hot dog wrapped in ham.
Sharing an open office can be "revealing" for employees in many ways, but the main goal of these no-wall floor plans is to increase creativity and collaboration.
This is why so many agencies are renovating and revising their offices to create more open spaces.
Havas Chicago recently spent $10 million dollars to renovate its office, an 81,000-square-foot space that houses 450 employees. In creating its new digs, the company got rid of all offices and included more communal work spaces. The agency now occupies two floors, instead of three.

50 Effective Ways To Boost Your Productivity

Work is punishment

I keep wondering why so many people put up with bad workplaces, bad bosses and bad jobs. Why are many people desperately unhappy at work (up to 50% according to some studies) but accept this as normal?

Here’s why: We’re carrying massive cultural baggage. Through much of Western history, there has been a sense that work is hard and unpleasant and that’s why we get paid to do it.

This is expressed most clearly in Max Weber’s biblically-based work The Protestant Work Ethic, which was used by Protestant preachers to preach that hard labor was good for people, good for Christian society, and a salve for original sin.

According to Christianity, humans used to live in the Garden of Eden, where everything was perfect. But because of original sin we were ejected and, according to Genesis 3:19, this is our situation now:
“By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Change work location at least once a day

This is something that inevitably has made me more productive and focused on singletasking. We read many times that we have to work on building a comfortable work space to focus. What I found was this: I had to create many of them.
To regain focus after finishing one task and moving on to the next one, just spending 5 minutes as a break, getting a drink or similar didn’t work. Nor did closing the laptop for 5 minutes or standing up
from my desk. I had to physically move from one place to another as part of my daily routine.
Most times I work out of my apartment for the first half of the day.
Then I have a list of coffee shops I can go to, or the lounge area in our apartment building. I know moving around isn’t possible for everyone. There are some very creative workarounds some companies have come up with though, that might help you here. Valve, dubbed “the bossless company”, gives every employee a desk mounted on wheels so they can change location during the day. #

The Pomodoro technique: a time management method

Productivity gurus of all sorts, ranging from Merlin Mann to the Flylady (aka Marla Cilley) recommend using a timer.
Pomodoro, named for a tomato-shaped kitchen timer and based on working for 25 minutes with 5 minute breaks and a longer break every four sessions.
The key here is to promise yourself that when your 25 minutes is up, you can walk away and do something else.   Do a little bit of work, get a little bit of reward.  Even 25 minutes a day will help you see some progress and get out of the procrastination cycle. It increase your focus when you feel scattered, to break through distraction and to help ensure that you’re making progress on the things that really matter to you.

Cf. software programs with timers and stopwatches for Windows:

Things to do in your 5 minute break at work

Try some simple desk exercises that don’t even require leaving your office:

Little household or administrative tasks:
  • Do a quick organizational chore. Not one that you dread, or find to be cumbersome. Just something small, like emptying out your backpack, purse, or briefcase, and reorganizing it, or cleaning up your desk area and tossing unnecessary documents. Or if you work from home, you could get a load of laundry started, or wash the dishes.
  • Or even keep it as simple as getting up to get a a cup of coffee or a glass of water.
